Pro Tips: Living The Entrepreneurial Life

Being an entrepreneur is a unique lifestyle. There are a lot of tasks to accomplish each day and no one telling you when or how to do them. It can be challenging to be in charge of yourself! Regardless of whether your small business is your full time job or a side job, all of those tasks can feel overwhelming on a day-to-day basis. Here are our pro tips for staying organized, motivated and on a path towards success!

  1. Program your day so that it feels like a routine. Humans are creatures of habit after all! Even if your schedule seems erratic because you work 2 part time jobs plus work on your business, there are certain items that you can structure throughout your day to make it feel l like a routine. For instance, wake up at the same time every morning and go to the gym. Or, over lunch each day read the news. If you schedule certain items throughout the day that you repeat day after day, congratulations- you have a routine!

  2. Maximize your productivity during the times that you are most alert. Each person has a specific time of day that they are the most alert. Mine is first thing in the morning and then again around 5:30. If you aren’t sure, take the time to keep a journal for a few days to see if there is a pattern. Once you find that pattern, schedule your most challenging items for that time. I am the most productive at 8:00 am. For that reason, I try to work on our bookkeeping as that is the most challenging part of my job. Later in the afternoon around 2 or 3, is my least productive. That is a good time for me to organize my office and file some paperwork.

  3. Make a to do list! A lot of entrepreneurs think about their businesses 24/7. It is so hard to turn your brain off! But, being excited about possibilities is different than staying up at night worrying about everything you have to do. If you make a list of 5-7 things you need to accomplish, you can stop worrying about them because your list is organized and ready to be tackled. You can incorporate this into your morning right after you wake up or evening right before you go to sleep to wind down. Find what works best for you! And, now you have another routine!

  4. Don’t procrastinate! See that list you made? Inevitably one item is not your favorite. Do that first! Otherwise it will weigh on you all day and I can guarantee it will be moved down the list a few times. If you can cross it off first thing, already you will feel accomplished and that is motivation to keep tackling that list!

  5. Sleep! For some reason working all of the time without sleep has turned into some sort of badge of honor. But when you are tired you are not working to your fullest capabilities and who wants to deliver subpar work? Make sure you schedule enough time for sleep into your day so that you are fully rested and ready to conquer the day!
